Portsmouth 100 Sing Gala Concert
Massed choirs and orchestra will gather at Portsmouth Guildhall on Saturday 9 May at 19:30 for the Portsmouth 100 Sing Gala Concert, celebrating the city’s centenary. The programme highlights music linked to Portsmouth, including three works by Freda Swain, the city’s leading 20th-century composer, championed by Professor George Burrows, who will also present a free lecture-recital. A new commission by Paul Saggers 'Portsmouth: Stone, Sand and Song', premieres alongside favourites such as Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens and Jerusalem, Rutter's Gloria, MacDowall 'Ave Maris Stella' and Walton’s Portsmouth Point. The event is supported by Portsmouth City Council. Full price tickets cost £18.70, which are available from the Guildhall. The concert is being presented by these groups: Solent Symphony Orchestra, Portsmouth Cathedral Choir, Portsmouth Choral Union, Portsmouth Baroque Choir, Portsmouth Grammar School Chamber Choir, Fareham Philharmonic Choir, HM Royal Marines Band. Conductors: Dr David Gostick, Dr David Price, Steve Tanner, Lt Col Huw Williams (RM). Soloists: Colin Walsh (organ), Alexandra Stevenson (soprano).
