Hope in Adversity
In a world shadowed by suffering, music can be a quiet act of defiance - and a gentle call to hope. Inspired by Southwark Cathedral’s vision to make space for love, and its commitment to confronting modern slavery, the Merbecke Choir offers a deeply evocative programme reflecting the light that emerges from even the darkest places. From the luminous intricacy of Renaissance polyphony mourning the exile of the Israelites, to the aching dignity of Tippett’s reimagined spirituals, and the spare, transcendent settings of Bonhoeffer’s prison prayers by Philip Moore, this music gives voice to those who have suffered—and to the hope that refuses to be extinguished.
